Seven-inch cylindrical roots with blunt ends and almost no fibrous core — crisp, bright orange, and notably sweet, especially after a light frost. Nantes types want loose soil free of rocks; in heavy clay they fork and stunt, so work in sand or compost or grow them in a raised bed. Sow thickly and thin ruthlessly, because crowded carrots stay small.
